Just Right

A Weekend at Saybrook Point Inn and Spa

In the 1960’s the yachting set, which included the power brokers and celebrities of the day, converged on the mouth of the Connecticut River. The river provides deep-water harborage as it emptied into the Long Island right at the end of Long Island, the trains traveled nearby, and the interstate highways made traveling to Saybrook Point easy from either Manhattan or Boston. Like the bald eagles who now winter in the area, they found the location not too far and not too close — just right.

The 1960’s Rat Pack getaway Terra Mar is long gone, but that just right location is now home of Saybrook Point Inn and Spa, a modern luxury inn that caters to the current era’s well-heeled. Modern business travelers find the location just right for conferences and retreats, not only easy to get to, but easy to get to from the big cities, but also a great home base for exploring the outdoor and gaming pastimes that Eastern Connecticut is known for.
The inn’s two guesthouses, “Tall Tales” and “Three Stories” look like lovingly preserved structures from the days when Yale Collage was founded in Saybrook. Three Stories is a restored Italianate guesthouse with eight individually-designed rooms, while French Second-Empire styled Tall Tales was built from the ground-up as a peaceful escape for groups, where members of a wedding party or business retreat can take one or all of the six luxurious rooms and enjoy the privacy and personal attention that they demand.

All of the guesthouse rooms feature private balconies, water views, fine linens on European bedding, and baths that are designed to make bathing an opportunity to find serenity.

But the guesthouse guests have access to the full amenities of the main inn, including the Sanno spa.

The spa might be a special treat for members of the bridal party, a spouse who accompanies a participant at a retreat, or it might the primary goal of the trip to Saybrook Point. Sanno makes guests feel pampered, with a full menu of services from massage therapy, facials, body wraps, and scrubs, to manicures and pedicures. A peaceful, serene ambiance carries from the changing rooms, to the relaxation rooms, to the 11 treatment rooms.

Saybrook Point’s Sunday Brunch is considered the best brunch in Connecticut. Reservations required, the brunch showcases the talents of the Inn’s catering staff, with selections for both breakfast lovers like custom-made omelets and waffles and for those who look forward to hand-carved meats, shrimp cocktail, pastas, and sweet pastries.

Relaxed, pampered, and well-fed, then tucked away in serenity of one of the inn’s guestrooms, the weekend will go quickly. Many stay longer, especially the seasonal boaters. Because of its deep-water marina and its ability to handle mega-yachts up to 200 feet long, Saybrook Point Inn and Spa continues to attract the yachting set who enjoy the amenities of the inn, spa, and restaurant and can expand their explorations further ashore with the inn’s shuttle or loaner bicycles. They, and the other visitors of the Saybrook Point Inn and Spa find it “Just Right”.
